Facebook For Business: Fan Pages

Q. "Why do I have to set up a PAGE for my BUSINESS? I want to just set up a new profile, OK?"

A.  Aside from violating the facebook terms of service, a personal profile for a business puts a 'kink' in your social media pipeline. Let me explain...

Human = Personal Profile
Business = Fan "Like" Page

Facebook was created for real human beings to connect with other human beings. This simple model is what makes facebook so wonderful.  It is simple, easy, and it helps us to connect with others that we might not connect with otherwise.

Example: You are a human, you are connected to your business, others find your business because of their connects to you... their sister, her brother, your aunt, the lady down the street. They may have not known you were connected to that business had it not been for the natural connections of facebook! When natural connection happen in facebook land, birds are chirping, flowers are blooming and all is right.

If you were to set up a personal profile for your business a few things happen that "throw off" the facebook universe.

  1. You loose the natural connections that humans have with other humans. When you walk down the street- YOU talk to people as an ambassador of your business. Your business doesn't go talk to the other business- and neither should your facebook page. Worried about privacy? You can change your setting to be a tight or loose as you want.
  2. You have two separate log ins and therefore must spend twice as long interacting wtih those people. Friends will get confused as to which profile to post too, you will have to interact with the same people on both pages to maintain these separate profiles. What do you think you are, a superhero?
  3. Fan pages are public, allowing anyone, and search engines, to see your page. Personal profiles have privacy setting and you might LOSE potential fans if you page is not fully visible. Pages also help to increase your likelihood  of your business coming up in searches.
  4. Profiles are limited to the number of "friends" one can have. Fan pages are unlimited.
  5. Let me remind you: It is against the facebook terms of service.  Once you violate those terms, you are subject to loosing all of your pages and connections. All of your hard work- GONE!
As you can see, a personal profile for your business will clog the system, make flowers droop, and birds will die. If you won't do it for me, do it for the birds.
